THE FACTS: Wario Land The Shake Dimension; Wario Land Shake It! (NA) Wii | Nintendo | 1 Player | Out Now Controller Compatibility: Wii Remote (sideways) Reviewer: Joe Currie The game has been subtitled The Shake Dimension partly due to the storyline. It seems the evil Shake King has kidnapped the queen of the shake dimension and stolen her bottomless coin sack, but Wario doesn't give two cloves of garlic about the queen he wants that bottomless coin sack and so sets out to snag it from the Shake King. This is a good old 2D platformer and has a strong retro "feel" to it, especially since there aren’t many present-gen 2D platformers around, but staying with the "shake" theme, you will also have to do a lot of shaking of the Wii remote as you progress. Simple moves can be done by the press of a button, but if want to do a ground slam then you must shake the remote up and down to activate it. In addition to this, there are other tricks Wario can perform as well such as jumping on a unicycle and balancing across a rope by balancing the remote. You can also jump in a submarine and shoot missiles on special under water levels, amongst many other special moves that I don't have space to write about here. The game has also got a truly unique graphical style here. Nintendo have surprisingly gone for hand drawn animation, which isn't necessarily a bad thing since it actually works extremely well and considering the amount of effort and detail that went into it, it really has turned out to be something spectacular compared to a standard 3D character. Even when playing as Wario it feels like you’re playing a cartoon which really brings it into its own. Overall, this is a truly unique adventure of which you have never seen the like of before. The only problems I have with the game is that it is too short, and in order to progress to subsequent worlds you have to collect coins and buy a map to continue, but that's likely there to increase replay value. Despite these minor niggles, this game its well worth a purchase, and both looks the part and plays like a true Nintendo gem. Final Score 24/30 Very Good Gameplay 9 Very unique controls and some distinctive gameplay which put a new definition on the word shake Presentation 10 Once again, very different, with some spectacular hand drawn graphics which work really well Enjoyment 4 Inventive boss fights and the excellent level design make this very enjoyable, although the coin collecting does get dull Other 3 Far too short, but the funny dialogue and character that Wario has about him make the experience all the more worthwhile |
