Review - Bomberman '93

THE FACTS: Bomberman '93
Virtual Console - TG-16 | 1-5 Players (Simultaneous - minimum of 1 GameCube controller) | Out Now | 600 Wii Points
Controller Compatability: Wii Remote; Classic Controller; GameCube Controller

I'm going to start this review by saying that, quite simply, this game is the best Virtual Console multiplayer title available right now. With up to five players (with unavailable players being subsidised by CPU of an un-changable difficulty) in battle mode, and eight different stages to choose from, there's a lot of fun to be had with this little game.

To play the game, you must drop bombs with the A (2) button, which will them destroy blocks and defeat opponents or enemies stood in the blast radius. That is all there really is to the standard gameplay, but with the addition of power ups that give you the ability to kick bombs, increase their blast radius or place several of them at once the game can be much more eventful and fun.

As well as the standard battle affair, this edition also includes a single player mode where you go around several large grids, bombing enemies. The enemies will each have their own ability, such as being able to hide away in a shell or fly over blocks. All you have to do is kill them all and then make it out of a hidden portal before the time is up. This mode is a nice addition and will be useful for building up the skills of those who can't easily get together to play with friends, but overall it does lack in the "enjoyment" factor.

To make this game really good, we would have asked for more options (such as difficulty and item choice) and better menu navigation (the inability to go back a menu means you can only restart the game by holding - and + and returning to the menu screen). As a local multiplayer battle affair though, this is tremendous fun, and is well worth a look in.

Final Score
22/30
Good

Gameplay 8
Addictive battle mode, but it feels as though it is lacking in options
Presentation 8
Colourful effects and bouncy music repeated until death ensues
Enjoyment 3
Fun in multiplayer, boring in single player
Other 3
The eight battle arenas make up for the poor single player game

I'd much recommend getting Bomberman Blast instead of this, but this is still a good game, despite what feels to me as an unfairly low rating. Even though it was me that rated it.
