Review - Chew Man Fu

THE FACTS: Chew Man Fu
Virtual Console - TG-16 | 1-2 Players (Simultaneous) | Out Now | 600 Wii Points
Controller Compatability: Wii Remote; Classic Controller; GameCube Controller

There are many overlooked games on the Virtual Console that you may not have thought about buying or may not have even heard of. This is probably one of them.

As an old puzzle game, this does very well when it comes to taking a stab at something different, with the premise being a simple "roll the coloured balls onto their corresponding spaces" game. That's not all though, as along your way you will find Yetis, Seals, balls of fire, Hedgehogs and more enemies crossing your path. Walk into one of these and you're dead, leaving you to restart the level again.

More "fun" comes with the extra items you can use, which may stop time, destroy the walls around you or switch the colours of your balls completely. You can always try to smash the walls blocking your destination by kicking the huge balls into them, which is what ultimately makes this game so unique (that, and the objective of the game being to bring back egg-fried-rice to your nation).

In a few added extras, you can play co-operatively or against a friend through the game, or even challenge people you know on levels you can design yourself. There is also a simple "kickball" multiplayer-only mode, where two players must kick one of the big marbles into the opposing players goal. Although it's similar to football, there are no extra team mates or obstacles, qhich surprisingly enough makes it all the more fun and addictive.

With 500 levels awaiting you and very challenging later levels, there is always something here for everyone with the simple gameplay that's easy to get to grips with and the bags of extra features included. For just 600 points, this is highly recommended, with the only major bad point we could think of being the random nature of the enemies respawning, when they could just appear on top of you, killing you instantly.

Final Score
24/30
Very Good

Gameplay 8
A simple puzzle idea that works very well, though enemy respawning can annoy
Presentation 7
Simple but work-able graphics and so-so music
Enjoyment 4
A fun game, though the harder levels can frustrate
Other 5
With 500 levels, a level editor and multiplayer co-op, vs and kickball modes there's a lot in this game to keep you happy
