Grand Slam Tennis' online modes outlined

IGN has recently published a look at the online modes found in EA's upcoming Grand Slam Tennis as per the conference held this past Friday. First of all, it's nice to get a confirmation that EA has worked really hard ensuring that lag is virtually unseen and IGN comments that even during doubles matches (that is, when two people are playing on the same console online), you "will not be able to detect any latency while playing against each other". That's really great to hear since lag would definitely screw up a tennis game. Apparently, the game only takes 30 seconds before you'll be ready to play.
Also worth noting is that the game's system will be monitored by EA servers through EA Nation, thereby foregoing the friend code system issued by the Nintendo Wi-Fi sevice. The game further expands on the system used in Madden 09 and promises for "even speedier access times". IGN comments that the game has a leaderboard-tracking system entitled "Battle of the Nations". Apparently, every match one plays will add points to the overall score of not only your own personal ranking but that of your country/nation as well. Things sound to be shaping up very nicely!

Nintendo confirms series of million-selling first-party titles

As per Nintendo's latest fiscal report, they have confirmed the current list of titles that have sold one million units till this day. Here are the total numbers (worldwide) for the following titles:

Nintendo DS
  1. Brain Training - 17.4 million
  2. New Super Mario Bros. - 18.4 million
  3. Mario Kart DS - 14.6 million
  4. Pokemon Platinum - 3.7 million
  5. Nintendogs - 22.2 million
  6. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon - 4.5 million
  7. Brain Training 2 - 13.7 million
  8. Kirby Super Star Ultra - 2.3 million
  9. Mario Party DS - 5.8 million
  10. Pokemon Diamond/Pearl - 16.8 million
  11. Rhythm Heaven - 1.9 million
  12. Personal Trainer: Cooking - 18.4 million
  13. Pokemon Ranger - 2 million
  14. Professor Layton - 1.6 million
  15. Super Mario 64 DS - 7.5 million
  16. Animal Crossing: Wild World - 10 million
Nintendo Wii
  1. Wii Sports - 45.7 million
  2. Wii Fit - 18.2 million
  3. Mario Kart Wii - 15.4 million
  4. Wii Play - 22.9 million
  5. Smash Bros. Brawl - 8.4 million
  6. Animal Crossing: City Folk - 3.3 million
  7. Wii Music - 2.65 million
  8. Link’s Crossbow Training - 3.76 million
  9. Super Mario Galaxy - 8 million
  10. Mario Party 8 - 6.7 million
  11. Mario Super Sluggers - 1.2 million

Look at those numbers! Crazy stuff! Some interesting things to point out: Professor Layton's sales do not include the sales in Japan which would mean that the sales are actually higher since the game is doing very well over there (especially since its spawned a whole series of entries).
Personal Trainer Cooking has reached a staggering 18.4 million in such a short time frame! Amazing! Rhythm Heaven hasn't been out that long and it's already reached 1 million! Mario Party DS has also done extremely well and just look at Mario Party 8's sales numbers: nearly 7 million! This further adds to the fact that another Mario Party entry must be right around the corner (E3!).
Despite the critical reception, Wii Music has gone on to sell quite a bit but Iwata himself commented that it's not doing as well as he had hoped. Personally, I think he just should count his blessings and be thankful the game didn't flop. But in any case, certainly the game will receive more sales if the price were to go down since many are still skeptical of spending the full price tag on the game especially with its harsh reception from critics.
Mario Super Sluggers has also capped on the million mark which is great. The game has been praised very well, even receiving awards from a few magazines. And just look at how many Mario Kart Wii has sold. Almost two times as much as Mario Galaxy! No wonder it's so easy to find people online, huh? These numbers are very encouraging to see.

Sakura Wars getting localized for North America

A press release was issued just last week confirming that Sakura Wars will be heading to NA on Wii and PS2. "After years of anticipation by hardcore gamers around the world, “Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love” will finally be released in North America this fall", the press release says. NIS America, the publisher, is also responsible for overseeing such projects as Disgaea, and Phantom Brave (which has also been confirmed for localization).
The game is a strategy RPG that consists of unique battle system with robotic characters that engage in aerial and ground combat. Sounds pretty sweet, plus, the Wii is in need of more RPG's so the more the merrier! They promise that the game will feature replay value in the form of "bonus features" and possibly an unlockable final "story" after they beat the game's 8 chapters.

Guitar Hero 5, Guitar Hero: Van Halen, Band Hero and DJ Hero coming this year

Activision has recently issued a press release announcing two new games and confirming that DJ Hero is in the cards for the 2009 year. Guitar Hero: Ban Halen marks yet another Guitar Hero game marketed towards a songs from a pecific group in the vein of Metallica (also on the way) and Aerosmith. Guitar Hero 5 is being called the "true sequel" to World Tour.

DJ Hero is definitely one to keep your eyes on. Since its announcement a couple of months ago, it's come quite far in its development. It's been rated E10+ according to the PR. Band Hero, a new game, will expand upon Guitar Hero's "signature gameplay" and deliver Top-40 hits further broadening its appeal to a "family audience". This will also be rated E10+, marking it as the first entry in the Guitar Hero series to be rated below Teen.

Anyone else think Activision is milking the Guitar Hero series like crazy? IGN expects all 3 Guitar Hero games to be showcased at E3 next month. Activision hopes to draw out new customers to their growing fanbase, as their press release points out. They are hoping that through DJ Hero, the diverse selection of music will draw out new gamers will get people into the social gaming experience that has been reinvigorated thanks to the Guitar Hero series.

Overall, they are very confident in the success and the future of the series. The President and CEO of the franchise has commented that he feels that the social aspect of music has re-surfaced thanks to the franchise and he's confident that the variety of music will increase the series' appeal.

Ubisoft wants to focus on core mechanics of Red Steel 2, wary about DLC

When asked about Red Steel 2, Ubisoft had a couple things with regards to how the game is coming along. Two particular quotes are of interest though, that of their talk on multiplayer and potential DLC. When asked if they would consider DLC, they had this to say:
  • "That would be cool. The world has changed, and we can do that sort of thing. I certainly think that would be cool. I’d buy it. But we need to be careful bringing out something that people think should be in the main game."
They also added that there's a strong possibility that Red Steel 2 might not feature multiplayer:
  • "We would love to create a multiplayer engine, but not right now. It’s single player because we want to really focus on the core mechanic and as much as we all want to kill each other with swords, it’s not going to happen this time."

Spyborgs could feature WiiMotionPlus

There's talk right now that Capcom could be using WiiMotionPlus in their upcoming ACtion game, Spyborgs. They are, indeed, looking at it but there's no confirmation as to whether or not they will pursue it further. Let's hope they approach it with the same mindset as HVS with The Conduit and not add it just for the sake of saying they have it added.
  • "We are taking a look at Wii MotionPlus right now. We have some ideas of what we’d like to do with it. At the very least, we know how we could enhance the core combat system that is well-designed around the regular Wii motion right now and we’re looking at some things that we could unlock that would be specifically designed around Wii MotionPlus."

XSEED uncertain about Retro Game Challenge 2's localization

XSEED hasn't seen enough sales yet to warrant localization of the game's sequel. They are hoping that word of mouth will cause more to pick the game up (I guess they don't have the means to advertise themselves in North America?) and give them the sales numbers they need to begin working on RG2's localization. They just want to be sure that it's worth bringing over.
  • "Retro Game Challenge started off well but still hasn’t gotten to the point where we can justify bringing over the sequel. It’s amazing how many people write to thank us for publishing that game, so perhaps as those enthusiast fans continue to spread the word we will get to where we need to be eventually."
Hopefully they'll get the numbers they need.

Contra Rebirth confirmed

Back in April, a trademark surfaced with regards to Konami possibly bringing a new entry under the "Rebirth" moniker. Contra Rebirth has recently been confirmed! The game will feature a slight graphic updates and gameplay and will cost 1,000 Wii Points over in Japan. The game hits on May 12th and still no news on a NA/EU release but it's a given.

Latest ACCF DLC: Yellow School Bus Model

I always said it would be cool if there was a toy model of the bus in the game! A model of the yellow school bus used to transport you to the city is the current DLC for ACCF in North America.

Peter Moore not worried about Virtua Tennis

Peter Moore is really confident in Grand Slam Tennis to the point that he goes on to say that he's not worried about the release of Virtua Tennis 2009 at all, claiming that Grand Slam Tennis has a couple of "advantages" over it.
  • "Virtua Tennis ships before us, but we think we’ve got an advantage with the grand slams, we’ve got an advantage with McEnroe and we’ve got an advantage because we’ll be bundling MotionPlus."

Virtua Tennis confirmed for June 2nd in North America

Despite claims that the game was being delayed, the admin over at the SEGA Boards assures us that the game is, indeed, being slated for a June 2nd release -- the same day that Grand Slam Tennis and Tiger woods PGA Tour 10 will be released. He had this to say:
  • "Right now the goal is still June 2nd. With EA’s news it looks like the two titles will be going head-to-head out the door, either the week after or the same week, depending on how it plays out. This one will be a battle either way. Still, VT has a great legacy behind it and battles like this can and do happen - we’ll continue to push and promote the game, and word of mouth from the VT fans also seriously helps. I know where my money lies, but then, I am a bit biased."

Grand Slam Tennis heading to PS3 and 360 at a later date

Portion of an interview with Peter Moore confirms that grand Slam Tennis will be adapted for the PS3 and Xbox 360 platforms at a later time. His direction regarding this is made clear in a recent interview with Kikizo:
  • "Well, let me be clear, we've announced Grand Slam Tennis on the Wii, June of this year, and later this year - I don't think we've got a specific date yet - it will be shipping on the Xbox 360 and the PS3. We decided to lead on the Wii because we needed to lead, and we knew Wii MotionPlus is coming; we thought this is a great opportunity, that the planets were aligning - what better game than tennis to show off MotionPlus - Nintendo agreed, and we have the ability to bundle."
Interesting. It's somewhat like the case with SEGA Superstars Tennis in a way where the Wii version would lead but the other versions would still maintain some of the enjoyment that the motion-controlled game would have over the games without it.

Little King's Story originally intended to be a veggie-based game

When asked where the inspiration for Little King's Story came from in a recent interview, the developer for the game had this to say:
  • "Lets make a game to rival Animal March! But lets make it about a castle made of vegetables... We were going to have a vegetable castle, with Princess Tomato and Prince Cabbage, and Baron Potato and Sir Turnip! Everyone was going to have veggies for heads! How about that?"
That's some crazy idea and look what spawned as a result!

OFLC rates Super Mario Kart and Pilotwings

Now how's this for big news! OFLC has recently rated Super Mario Kart and Pilotwings, confirming that they are, indeed, coming to the Virtual Console. This is especially big news since the 300th VC Game is coming very soon and as such, Nintendo could be planning something big to commemorate such a momentous feat! Could these two titles be fair game for a nationwide release on the VC? Time will tell!

EA reveals new IP in Japan

"Shonen Kininden Tsumuji" is the name of a new DS game that's being shown off by EA over on the Western part of the world. The game features a young ninja named Tsumuji who needs to save his family from a "mysertious group of ninjas" who have attacked his village. The game has you exploring dungeons, throwing shurikens, searching for secret areas, defeating foes using the stylus, and more. IGN had this to add:
  • "EA showed the game in January at Japan's World Hobby Fair event, but asked the Japanese media to refrain from speaking about it. The title will be reappearing this weekend at a Coro Coro Comics sponsored event at the Suzuka Circuit raceway. This hopefully means official details will follow through the usual Japanese sources like Famitsu."
Let's hope we hear of a stateside release.

Spyborgs to feature Classic Controller support, early build problems

IGN's recent hands-on shows that Spyborgs needs some touching up before release:
  • "At this stage, there's some disconnect between your gesticulations and resulting character moves that rob the experience of any satisfying visceral clout. However, there's plenty of time to tweak controls for a more satisfactory adventure, plus Bionic claims it's currently looking into offering full Classic Controller support in the final game."
Let's hope they get that fixed. We'd hate to have that happen to such a promising title. At the very least, Classic Controller support may be added so that's a nice touch as well.

ESRB Ratings: Swords & Soldiers

Lookie what got rated by the ESRB today: Swords & soldiers. A while back, the developers said the game would be coming "very, very soon" and just by the fact that the ESRB has rated it is a good indicator that the game has a high chance of appearing this month, and even in the next update this coming Monday. The game has been rated E10+ for Cartoon Violence and Mild Suggestive Themes. Here's what the summary has to say about why it was rated that:
  • "This is a side-scrolling strategy game in which players guide an army to destroy an opponent's base. Players' units automatically walk toward the enemy base and battle small, "cartoony" units (e.g., aztecs, skeletons, Vikings, monkey ninjas, etc.) along the way. Many depictions of combat are whimsical (e.g., small stubby characters; the words swoosh, chop, klang appear with yellow stars to indicate damage), however, the sound effects serve to accentuate the violence: constant axes clashing; arrows/darts flying through the air; and enemies crying out in pain. During the course of the game, female Vikings are depicted with exaggerated-sized breasts."
Things are looking good for a release soon!

Ongaku heading to WiiWare

This flash game is heading to the WiiWare service. The game has you painting a picture by hitting colour gems that flow based on the music. When you miss notes, apparently the "Feedback Monster" comes out and, from my guess, probably makes things harder for you.
  • "Our first product, Ongaku is a music based computer game. This genre of game is known as a ‘Rhythm Action’ game. The player controls a musical character called Ongaku. The player must hit notes in time to the music which are represented on screen as coloured gems, colour then disperses onto the background canvas and paints a picture. Any notes missed result in the creation of a Feedback Monster, which then damages Ongaku’s health. The goal of the game is to paint a complete picture on the background canvas for each of the game’s levels."
The original flash game can be found below.

High Voltage Software has no plans for DSi, more WiiWare in the works

When asked what their approach is towards DSi and the DSiWare service, High Voltage Software replied this way:
  • "We currently don't have any plans in the works for DSiWare, but you never know what system will make the most sense to develop for in the future."
When asked about the WiiWare service and how things have been faring up until now, they had this to add:
  • "Now that Nintendo has released the 4.0 system update we're hoping that consumers will feel more compelled to purchase WiiWare titles since they can now download and play them directly from their SD cards. If that starts to happen, then it's likely that High Voltage will develop more WiiWare games in the coming years."
It'll be interesting to see what other WiiWare titles they would bring to the table next especially if The Conduit sells/does well, they'd probably be more inclined to promote online play in future titles.

User creation and multiplayer modes were considered for Furry Legends

In a recent interview, the developer of Furry Legends was asked if there were plans for multiplayer, challenging and/or creation modes for the game. Here's what they had to say:
  • We had such plans initially, but after a through project review, we found out that we wouldn't be able to both fit the game into WiiWare and make it in time. Thus we had to remove such features, unfortunately. We do hope to see them again some time, though.
If the game does well, that could encourage them to possibly making a sequel that would take advantage of these kinds of features that were considered at some point in the game's development.

Mighty Flip Champs sequel possible, Shantae being considered

When asked in a recent interview about whether or not Wayforward would consider having additional levels in the form of DLC for Mighty Flip Champs, they responded by saying:
  • "We could, but I think we'd rather do a sequel. It's nice to get a whole new package with new ideas."
Then, this was added:
  • "More levels are all well and good, but it's also "more of the same". With a service as open as DSi is, we could keep pushing the series rather than just adding on top of it. Flip Champs will be worth your cash on its own, but if we've got the time, cash, and fan support to devote more time to it, I'm with Matt on this one. We've already got some great ideas for a sequel..."
It's nice way to see what their outlook is like concerning the DSiWare service as a whole. They seem to think it has a lot of potential and they want to be at the forefront of that by continuing to take advantage of what the service holds out for them.
  • "We're using Mighty Flip Champs as a way to gauge fan interest, and to see how the DSiWare service performs. We'd like to do a Shantae sequel for DSiWare."
So they are considering Shantae but that's provided if Mighty Flip Champs does well -- and given what's on the table right now, there's no reason why it wouldn't succeed on the service, especially if it were to be the first title to really take advantage of the service.

Furry Legends nearly finished, could come this summer

Taken from a recent interview on N-Europe, this quote confirms that development of Furry Legends is well under way and they are close to putting on the final touches within the next month or so.
  • "What I can tell you is that I want Furry Legends to cost the right amount of money for the content we'll be providing. Depending on the amount of content in the game, the price may vary. As for the release date, this is again something that is being set by the big N. Internally, we're aiming to end the development cycle around end of June 2009, which would put game going Live between 3rd and 4th quarter of this year."

PEGI Ratings: Gameloft DSiWare titles, new WiiWare title

The following games have recently been rated by the PEGI Board. We get a re-confirmation of Brain Challenge for the DSiWare, we learn that Pop Superstar: Road to Celebrity is close to being finalized and we learn of a new WiiWare game entitled "HB Arcade Cards" by HB Studios. What could this entail? Could this be a game in the vein of Clubhouse Games for the WiiWare service?

Highlights from Ubisoft's Fiscal Report

Time to analyze Ubisoft's fiscal report! It's not as lengthy as say, Konami's, but it still has some good details contained within it.
  • "A continued very strong showing for games for Wii, including Rayman Raving Rabbids® TV Party and Shaun White Snowboarding: Road Trip, combined with the successful launch of My Fitness Coach."
Couple of keys here: First, they consider My fitness Coach to be a success, so obviously the game is selling well, particularly in the EU regions I imagine. Secondly, they acknowledge that RRR TV Party and Shaun White Snowboarding did very well as a whole and they are impressed with the sales numbers for both. After the press release was issued, over on GamesAustra, it was commented that Ubisoft is planning more Shaun White in the near future so that's something to look forward to as well.

  • "In addition to strengthening our existing franchises - particularly Far Cry and Rayman Raving Rabbids, whose sales were up by more than 50% on their previous performances - we successfully launched two new million-unit-selling brands with Shaun White and Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X, confirming our entry into the sports segment and bolstering our position in the air combat segment."
Sales of Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party were 50% higher than Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 and that's asying a lot since the game's only been out for about 6 months or so whereas its predecessor has been out for quite some time. Very impressive numbers. The success of Shaun White Snowboarding has confirmed ta successful first entry into the "sports segment". Could this be why they are planning on revealing a sports game for the Wii soon?

  • "The results of these efforts will be seen as early as this Christmas with one of the industry's most ambitious games line-ups which will include Assassin's Creed 2, James Cameron's Avatar, Splinter Cell Conviction, Rabbids Go Home and Red Steel 2."
Could Ubisoft be planning something else for the holiday season? One analyst was a bit fearful for Ubisoft's success this holiday season, fearing that their games wouldn't go as noticed as they would if they were released at an earlier date. We'll have to see how things play out for them.

  • "3 new brands - R.U.S.E., I am Alive and a sports game for the Wii."
A new sports game for the Wii? Could it feature WiiMotionPlus? Could we hear something at E3? Time will tell!
Overall, a very successful year for Ubisoft, wouldn't you say? Certainly, Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party helped a lot.

Spyborgs features Achievements system

Confirmed via the Fact Sheet Capcom issued out for the game:
  • "Similar to Xbox 360 and PSN, players are rewarded with an Achievement Title signifying their accomplishment. Taking it one step further, these Achievements also unlock bonus videos, concept art and new challenges in the game."
It's always nice to see more and more Wii games incorporating an Achievements system.

New tidbits about Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games

A couple of new details can be found in a recent hands-on that The Sonic Stadium had not too long ago.
  • "Apparently many players didn’t get as far as unlocking all of the Dream Events which is a scenario Sega wish to avoid this time round. Speaking of Dream Events Sega have been working closely with Nintendo and have been granted much more freedom with them meaning more items will appear from Sonic and Mario’s world to be used in whatever bizarre races they have planned this time."
So it seems that they've acknowledged that some didn't stick with the original long enough to even unlock the Dream Events (lack of interest/motivation?) so to avoid that, they'll probably have them unlocked early on.
  • "During certain races you’re given the ability to ‘boost’ by tapping the A button on the Wii Remote. The animation is different for each character but is usually a throwback to the past. Sonic for example does a spindash while Tails lifts a few feet from the air and propels himself forwards with his twin tails. Mario on the other hand has a spinning move as last seen in Mario Galaxy and Luigi appears to shoot himself forwards out of an imaginary cannon as seen in Smash Bros. As well as looking good tactical boosting could shave a good few seconds off your time."
Well, that's cool. It sounds like they're incorporating animations for special attacks in the same vein as SEGA Superstars Tennis. That's a nice touch, actually.
  • "I can tell you it won’t be Espio and Charmy of the Chaotix as they resumed their job waving flags and firing the starting pistol at the side of the track."
Confirms that Espio and Charmy are still returning in the same positions and such, it's doubtful they'd be unlockable characters as part of the new roster.
  • "You can’t fight on the track though as Downhill skiing is usually a solo affair. You opponent appears on your screen as a ‘ghost’ so you can see them as you play at the same time in split screen but you can’t interfere with their race. You can however press ‘A’ for a boost to try and catch up."
I wonder if they could incorporate some sort of online play this way! If not, at the very least allow for friends to exchange Ghost Data, no?
  • "So who would win in a competitive competition between Team Sonic and Team Mario? The outcome of the summer Olympics was kept ambiguous but for the Wii version of the sequel Sega is panning a ‘Festival Mode’. This mode pits the two teams against each other in two separate campaigns to decide an ultimate winner of the Olympic Winter Games."
So this time, they're actually competing for the prize and there's more of a storyline (if you will) than the first time. I imagine some sort of surprise events will shake things up, though. Some nice details hidden away in that hands-on.

Picture Book Games: A Pop-Up Adventure getting localized!

Nintendo's first-party WiiWare title that was previously a JPN-only exclusive has now been confirmed to be hitting the EU region at some point. IT's only a matter of time before it sees localization and is confirmed for release in North America. The original game was a board game in the vein of Mario Party or Monopoly set inside a pop-up book. The game is being localized under the moniker: "Picture Book Games: A Pop-Up Adventure".

Not too long ago, a site did a hands-on with the game and it's shaping up really well in preparation for its release next month. So the question is, just how good is the motion in Virtua Tennis 2009? One preview had this to say:

"Wii MotionPlus allows for a true 1:1 correlation between your motions with the Wiimote and what you see in the game (which is, of course, what we all thought we were getting with the Wii in the first place). When I say “1:1,” I mean it: if you hold the Wiimote out to your right, and then bring it across your body to your left, that’s what your in-game player will do. Rotate the Wiimote in your hand, and the player will rotate his/her racket. It’s absolutely unlike anything I’ve ever seen in a videogame from an immersion perspective -- aside from wearing tennis shoes and standing on an actual court, you might as well be holding a real racket in your hands, because that’s how the Wii Remote functions with MotionPlus attached."

Sounds like a truly intuitive experience, wouldn't you say?

Vertigo confirmed for June 16th release

Playlogic Entertainment recently issued a press release confirming that Vertigo, the "futuristic racing puzzle game" that was announced a couple of months ago for the Wii and PC will be available on June 16th, "nationwide". The game's release date was up in the clouds for some time so it's nice to get a confirmation.

Konami's Fiscal Report analyzed, new DDR entries hinted

The following extractions are some highlights from Konami's fiscal report for the year which ended on March 31st. Their outlook for the future seems very positive, however, some details within the report ae worthy of note.

For starters, take a look at their goals for the next fiscal year:
  • "We will further strengthen collaboration in product research and development at our three hubs in North America, Australia and Japan, and by reinforcing our partnerships, we intend to boost management efficiency, develop new products that respond to social changes and people’s preferences, and add value to existing products, while promoting an increase of production and sales. With entertainment, which is Konami’s main business area, as the foundation, we will continue to introduce new products that will be enjoyed to an even greater extent by our customers."
Some keys there are that the plan to "develop new products" in response to "social changes". Within the report, they highlighted that the rapid decline in the economy as a problem they may have to wrestle with looking to the future. With that in mind, they also are seeking to add more "value to existing products" and properties. They hope these these will cause cutsomers to enjoy their existing properties "to an even greater extent", possibly by adding new features and USP's.

Next highlight in the report: they acknowledge the rapid success of the DDR series, particularly in North America. This is mostly related to the home releases and it's obvious that DDR Hottest Party and Hottest Party 2 have much to do with this success (as evidence by the fact that HP2 was first released in NA, then Japan under a different monacre with slightly different songs). They also acknowledge the success of the Karaoke Revolution series:
  • "In North America, DanceDanceRevolution has gained popularity and continued to enjoy favorable sales, with the standard favorite and KARAOKE REVOLUTION American Idol ENCORE 2, which were sold under multiple platforms, sold well... Repeat sales of DanceDanceRevolution SuperNOVA 2, DanceDanceRevolution HOTTEST PARTY and KARAOKE REVOLUTION American Idol ENCORE, all of which went on sale previous fiscal year, were all strong."
Hottest Party is still selling really well, so that's great to hear! Something in particular, though, is interesting. Notice that they plan on capitalizing on the success of Karaoke Revolution as it continued to see good sales. Soon after this fiscal report was issued, Konami announced a new entry in the Karaoke Revolution series. Could this be a hint that more DDR games are coming very soon? Particularly ones in North America (i.e., concerning the Hottest Party series)? It's interesting to think about!

The last extraction from their fiscal report has to do with their outlook for the next fiscal year (which has since already started for them). What they have to say is very interesting and could have added meaning for certain properties in the near future (especially with E3 right around the corner)! Here's the statement:
  • "In addition to efforts made in Japan where the digital entertainment is a mature market, we will focus on the North American and European video game markets which are growing steadily.... In North America, we will focus on music games, which maintain a deep-rooted popularity, and continue to roll out the DanceDanceRevolution series on multiple platforms. We intend to enrich the lineup of titles distributed online, including Chaotic Eden, a dungeon exploration-type RPG scheduled to begin distribution in South Korea. We will also proactively respond to the online marketing of titles for game consoles with network connectivity, introducing new titles and content original to Konami. In the arcade video games, we will strive to further enrich and expand the product lineup that uses the e-AMUSEMENT service... As for popular content, we will pursue high synergy through multifaceted development that is not restricted to video game software, arcade video games and card games."
First off, they acknowledge that in North America, their games under their Digital Entertainment segment (which would include the DDR series) have a "deep-rooted popularity". Their plans for the future? They plan to continue with the DDR series on "multiple platforms". That statement alone can mean a lot. Certainly, that could indicate taht a new DDR is coming for PS2, 360 and Wii platforms, or since X was released not too long ago and the AC version is still in development, it could mean the 360 and Wii versions will get updates only. Either way, it's looking very likely that they'll be announcing something very soon! Secondly, notice that they acknowledge the need for online distribution! "We intend to enrich the lineup of titles distributed online", so this could indirectly refer to their WiiWare efforts, and we can see that they are taking the time to have a look at how things are being done there since they announced Driift for the service shortly after this fiscal report was compiled. Also notice that they plan to respond to the "online marketing of titles for game consoles with network connectivity". PS2, 360 and Wii all have network connectivity. They all have room for improvement as far as Konami's properties are concerned. For example, despite being on the "mainstream" DDR platform, DDRX did not feature any sort of online connectivity. It's quite possible that they'll capitalize on that with a new PS2 entry that will feature online play since SuperNova's servers have gone down since it was released years back. For 360, we have the Universe series which is growing strong with DLC and good online play so they are doing well in that regard. As for Wii, it's completely undeniable that Konami must capitalize on the Wii's online capabilities! Many have expressed interest in online play being supported in the next entry in the Hottest Party series. That's not only coming from fans of the series, but even critics alike. Since the first HP, the lack of online play was criticized, however, it was more excusable since it was their very first entry on the Wii. But once Hottest Party 2 came along, they had more experience and naturally, if they wanted to, they could've pursued the idea of adding online play but they didn't. Instead, they decided to focus on strengthening the overall experience, especially as far as the Hand Marker system is concerned - and boy am I ever happy they worked on it! What better time to add online play than with the next HP entry? After all, the core gameplay is very solid, what other improvements could they possibly add that wouldn't make the next entry seem more like the same old thing just with new songs? Online play is the most glaring improvement that they could make, as would be DLC (possibly of titles in the first HP that didn't make it in the North american release and even the new and revived KO's in Furu Furu Party over in Japan), and a strong Edit Mode. Given the fact that they have expressed interest in looking into the avenues surrounding online further with this fiscal year, it's quite possible that online play will be included. We'll have to wait a bit longer before we hear something, though.

After all this information contained within this fiscal report, one could certainly see that Konami is still growing strong but they see the need to continue to strengthen their existing properties and come out with new products despite the economic situation they are faced with. Could we hear something soon with regards to upcoming DDR games? Why certainly! It's very likely, particularly, that a new entry in the Hottest Party series and the mainstream DDR series on the PS2 will be revealed, as excerpts from the fiscal report hint at. A new entry in the Hottest Party series seems especially likely, though because, as was touched on earlier, the Karaoke Revolution series was credited for having good success this past fiscal year, and soon thereafter, Konami announced a new entry in the series. After acknowledging the strong sales of the Hottest Party series, and given a combination of other variables touched on within the report, a new announcement looks very likely. Keep your eyes and ears open for an announcement especially with E3 right around the corner. Anytime between now and June 2nd is fair game for an announcement with regards to the DDR series. (Could they be announcing one for the PS3? What other surprises do they have in store?) Given Konami's track record with previous announcements of new DDR games (even last year), evidence would point to an announcement a week or two before E3.

There is more information contained within the report as far as their personal assets, their investments in R&D and other minute details so by all means, check it out if you're interested.

Gameloft partners up with SEGA Europe, bringing Sonic Unleashed to mobile platforms!

Gameloft announced today via a press release that they are being given licensing rights from SEGA Europe to bring "multiple mobile games" from SEGA. Sonic Unleashed will be the first game that they will be developing collaboratively for mobile platforms! How exciting! Rather than being a straight port, the game has some new features as well, but not much has been said regarding these. A tease of these exclusives is that the game will feature a "new personality with exciting new skills". Anyone care to speculate on what those could be? In the meantime, let's soak it all in. This has a lot of potential! The game will be released in EU and AU next month, June 2009. No word yet on a NA release.

Rubik's World Receives Award

Rubik's World, Game Factory's family-friendly puzzle game, received an award recently from the Parents' Choice Foundation. They were awarded with the 2009 Parents' Choice Silver Award. The non-profit foundation is designed to "help parents and caregivers of all achievements and backgrounds make informed decisions about which new products are right for their children". Nice feat, indeed. Game Factory commented that they are very happy with their achievements.

ESRB Ratings: Overturn!

Overturn has just been rated by the ESRB confirming that it is, indeed, getting localized for North America! It's already been confirmed for EU but things were in limbo as to whether or not it would, indeed, come to NA but it looks like it is after all! This is great news! The game's been rated E10+ for Fantasy Violence. Here's the ESRB Summary:
  • This is a futuristic fighting game in which players compete in tournament-style battles using customizable robots. Presented from a third-person perspective, the game allows players to use a targeting crosshair to launch laser fire at robot opponents that hover across stadium fields, carrier platforms, and arena grids. Players use an assortment of fantastical weapons (futuristic rockets, lasers, grenades, track mines) to defeat their opponents. Laser fire and mild explosions can be heard throughout the game.
Question is: When exactly will it appear?!

Iwata acknowledges the lack of first-party titles

In a recent conference, Iwata made this statement:
  • “As for our deployment during the latter half of this year, I would like to announce on the other day as it is not today’s main topic. I would like to address that Nintendo recognize that we have been short of new proposals during the former half of this year, so far.”
Nintendo sees the need for a stronger first-party support, which is what many have been saying for quite some time now, but it's nice to know that Iwata is aware of this. This is even more reason to look forward to E3 this year. There are most definitely some big announcements coming from Nintendo and other developers. Let's hope that Nintendo announces some titles that will make us have faith in them once again.

Wakeboarding in Active Life: Extreme Challenge

Joystiq recently tested out the sequel to Namco's successful Family Trainer game and commented on a few of the game's challenges. One in particular caught my eye:
  • "The final mode we tried was wakeboarding. For this, we actually held the Wiimote sideways like a waterskiing tow rope's grip. We tilted it left and right in the wake in order to pass through colored gates which were sometimes -- but not always, it was tricky -- followed by jumps. The better-timed our jumps off the mat, the fancier the tricks we'd perform."
Back at GDC, IGN mentioned talk on the press floor about a wakeboarding title for Wii. Could this "talk" have just have been regarding one of the games in AL:EC or could another title be in the works? We'll have to wait and see but this development is, nonetheless, very interesting.

Cook or be Cooked may use WiiMotionPlus

Namco is looking into using WiiMotionPlus for the recently-announced cooking game (partnered with the popular Food Network channel), Cook or be Cooked. If they execute it perfectly, it would be nice to have a cooking game that has perfect 1:1 motion but I'm not sure how many that would appeal to (although the Food Network moniker is sure to be an eye-catcher).

Nintendo Power promises surprises for Wii in next issue

The writers of NP seem to be hinting at some surprises for Wii that they plan to reveal in their next issue. Here's a quote from their current issue:
  • "No teases or sly hints about next month’s cover game, because we know how long many of you have been waiting for our big story on Kingdom Hearts 385/2 Days for DS. We’ll also reveal a couple of cool Wii surprises and review big-name games like The Conduit and Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings-all in just 30 short days!"
I have a sneaking suspicion as to what those titles are and, not only that, but I have a feeling that's not all they plan to have exclusives of in the next 2 months.

Analyst lists Top 20 upcoming third-party titles for Wii

A study was done recently which examined a series of upcoming titles for Wii and based on the current Wii audience, a level of purchase intent was calculated. Here were their Top 20 predictions for the upcoming year/2nd and 3rd quarter (based on what titles we know so far):

1. Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo EAD)
2. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Sega)
3. Need for Speed Nitro (EA Montreal)
4. Madden NFL 10 (EA Tiburon)
5. Modern Warfare 2 (rumored, no developer announced; published by Activision)
6. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 (EA Tiburon)
7. Punch-Out!! (Next Level Games, Nintendo)
8. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (EA Bright Light)
9. EA Sports Active (EA Canada)
10. X-Men Origins: Wolverine (Amaze Entertainment, Activision)
11. Indiana Jones & the Staff of Kings (LucasArts)
12. Boom Blox Bash Party (EA Los Angeles)
13. The Beatles: Rock Band (Limited Edition bundle) (Harmonix Music Systems, EA/MTV Games)
14. The Beatles: Rock Band (game only) (Harmonix Music Systems, EA/MTV Games)
15. NCAA Football 10 (EA Tiburon)
16. Ghostbusters: The Video Game (Red Fly Studio, Atari)
17. Tom Clancy's HAWX (Ubisoft Romania)
18. Grand Slam Tennis (EA Canada)
19. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (Krome Studios, Activision)
20. Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (Eurocom, Activision)

Apparently, The Conduit is listed in at 22nd. Reason being? "Awareness and Purchase Intent is pretty low for this title, which is not surprising if you think about your average Wii owner. It will be interesting to see if it gains some momentum in the next month or so before launch."

It's interesting to note that a lot of these titles are from EA but it's also interesting to note the lack of certain titles in the Top 20. I was surprised to see Ice Age 3 pop up when such games as Virtua Tennis 2009 don't even make the cut. It's also interesting to note that they're predicting that Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 will do much better overall than Grand Slam Tennis, and that I find hard to believe. Grand Slam Tennis looks like it'll have a higher success and therefore shouldn't be so low on the list but that's just my take on it. Some of the other titles on here are of no surprise to me at all (namely Wii Sports Resort, Need for Speed: Nitro, EA Sports Active and Mario & Sonic and the Winter Games).

Prince declines offer for Guitar Hero appearance

Apparently, Activision spoke with Prince at some point regarding Guitar Hero and they made him an offer in hopes of licensing his song maybe in a future game or as part of a downloadable pack. In any case, Prince declined their offer, and the reasons as to why is no less interesting. The reason behind his declining their offer has more to do with how he feels about the franchise as a whole than anything else.
  • "I just think it’s more important that kids learn how to actually play the guitar. It’s a tough instrument — it’s not easy. It took me a long time, and it was frustrating at first. And you just have to stick with it, and it’s cool for people who don’t have time to learn the chords or ain’t interested in it, but to play music is one of the greatest things. To create something from nothing is one of the greatest feelings, and I would — I don’t know, I wish it upon everybody. It’s heaven."
That doesn't entirely make sense for why he'd flat out refuse but I guess he wants nothing to do with them, which is too bad for the fans that would've loved to play his songs but I support his decision either way.

Harvest Moon: Ranch Store's first DLC pack

Harvest Moon: Ranch Store has already released in Japan and it's already getting its first pack of downloadable content. Marvelous has plans to issue more DLC packs on a monthly basis for 500 Wii Points each. This particular pack has a vegetable theme. It enables you to play a "watermelon juicing mini-game" and to meet a new character named Potpourri. Doesn't sound too big of a deal for 500 Points....

Major Minor's Majestic March only sells 600 copies in Japan

Rough numbers suggest that Major Minor only sold an abysmal total of 600 copies in Japan during its first week! That's absolutely terrible. This was despite the fact that they had a special promotion running in Japan that had animated shorts based on the game air for a week. VG Chartz also has information compiled for the rough sales in North America and they sit at about 900 copies, once again, a very low count. Things aren't looking good for Majesco right now.

Capcom has secret titles lined up for E3

We've known for quite some time now that Capcom is one of the developers for Wii that currentl;y have secret projects in the works and according to their Twitter profile, two of these projects will be surfacing at E3!
  • "You think we have great titles now? Wait ’til we announce two more at E3!"
Any predictions? I'd love to see Ace Attorney for Wii and Zack and Wiki 2 would please me endlessly but I bet everyone's minds are set more towards Mega Man anyhow.

IGN's Wii Game of the Month

Excitebots: Trick Racing which took the prize for Wii as a "relentlessly fast" sequel complete with "clean visuals" and "frienzied gameplay mechanics" that translate well into the overall package. IGN was very pleased with how the sequel turned out. What's also noteworthy is the fact that Banjo-Tooie took the award for XBLA, with IGN citing it as a "masterpiece". That only adds to the pain of Wii owners who are dying to see it release on the Virtual Console.

All-Star Cheerleading Squad sequel announced

Not only did the game sell enough to warrant a sequel from THQ accompanied with Balance Board support and (supposedly) much more fluid gameplay, but the game now has Wi-Fi capabilities where you can challenge your friends in dance-offs! Nice move, THQ! I'm looking forward to seeing more titles from them incorporate WC24 or WFC Support. Within their press release, THQ cites such improvements as "an upgraded routine editor", "a music mixer", "a choreography editor" and, of course, "the ability to challenge friends via WiiConnect24". sounds like they're really pulling out all the punches on this one. They'll have some competition especially since We Cheer's sequel just got announced also.

We Rock: Drum King gets name change

505 Games has changed the name for their ambitious music-based game coming to the Wii and surely this will get the game more sales. Why, you may ask? It's been renamed to Rolling Stone: Drum King. Now there's a good license to mooch sales off of! The boxart itself looks quite eye-catching also.

Toribash - WiiWare Development Video

Toribash is quite close to completion. A video has been compiled showing off some animations from the game hopefully convincing viewers what the game is capable of as a WiiWare project. The developers assured me that the game's "blood" can be toggled freely, either with colours or simply with the familiar red depending on what one feels comfortable with. It would've been nice for them to include an option to take it off entirely just in case.

Another Code R confirmed for EU release!

A (terrible) placeholder boxart has been recently issued further confirming that Another Code R will, indeed, be hitting Europe this year. The first confirmation of this was in Nintendo's last lineup of games that was compiled. I seriously hope that's not the final case, though, because it's pretty bad and I can guarantee you it will deter attention. Why haven't we heard about this hitting NA yet, anyway? It's kinda frustrating for people that do want it but at the same time, I got a feeling we'll hear something in the next few days (especially with E3 quickly approaching).

'Wii no ma' Video Service begins today in Japan!

Nintendo's video download service has gone live today in Japan! This latest channel from Nintendo is a big service designed for hosting original video content from Nintendo and other companies depending on the region. Booting up the channel, you'll observe that you can host a whole family of Mii's and have them congregate in a visual living room either in front of the dinner table or in front of the TV. It's actually really neat to see how they interact with each other and the various areas that one can access in this space.

The television area will host the downloadable videos and programs that can be viewed in a similar vein as on the Nintendo Channel. They can be set categorically by recommendations, most recently added, and so on. There's no news on what kind of programs the service will host except for the default program that seems to be available at the start - an informational video on lions in Africa. Some can be downloaded for free but others must be paid for - it'll be interesting to see if certain videos have enough motivating factors to get one to purchase them.

The channel has other features such as being able to access company products, and spokespeople that can interact with your family. Apparently, product samples and coupons will be made available through this channel and they can be sent to your address! Additionally, there is interconnectivity with the DSi. Users can download their favourite videos to their handheld for portable viewing. Interestingly enough, not too long ago, Cammie Dunaway did claim in a recent interview that they'd love to see the DSi get a video service, and low and behold, this special channel comes along.

And yes, this is confirmed for a release in other regions. It was confirmed in a December interview but just to be safe, it was re-confirmed soon after the service was announced just to put inquiring minds in other parts of the world at rest. All in all, there seems to be a lot of potential here so we'll have to see how Nintendo plans to support this new service!
