Pre-Show Hype: Need for Speed: The Run

Are we supposed to be excited for a new Need for Speed title on the Wii? Not when the previous efforts have proven to be effortless ports. I have always loved the Need for Speed series, with Hot Pursuit 2, and Underground being my favourites in the entire run of the franchise. Need for Speed: Nitro was the first Wii-exclusive title in the series, and that met with mixed reactions. So it doesn't surprise me that they haven't decided to take that approach again. Still, the upcoming holiday release of Need for Speed: The Run sounds like something to look forward to only because this will be the first title from the series to appear on the 3DS.

It's been stated that this game will take the series "to the next level", but I'm not buying it just yet since they used similar words to describe last year's game. I have many doubts over the Wii version's ability to turn out good given what we've already seen. However, it is interesting to note that the temporary boxart for the game shows a Wi-Fi symbol, but I'm not taking that as a confirmation of online play just yet -- and neither should you. At this point, we have no way of knowing whether or not the 3DS version will feature online play, but if it does, it will be a big selling point for sure.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the game compares with the likes of Ridge Racer 3D, so to that end, I'll remain vigilant this week in searching for videos of this new project. And hopefully I'll have more positive things to say about The Run in the future.
