SEGA has secret plans with Dreamcast's 10th Anniversary, "keen" on digital distribution

September 9th, 2009 will mark the 10-year anniversary for the SEGA Dreamcast, which first launched on 9/9/99. Since SEGA has been publicly celebrating the 20th anniversary of the SEGA Genesis, it begs the question: Does SEGA have plans to celebrate the Dreamcast's anniversary as well? One of the SEGA heads had this to say:
  • "Generally we won't be doing anything that's official. The main reason is that Sega has reinvented itself as a software company. And it's important for us to focus on the other platforms that are alive and current. Informally, because there are people in the company who were involved in the Dreamcast launch, there will be celebrations. But as a company, publicly, that's going to be something we're going to be pretty low key about for obvious reasons."
Kind of understandable, really. But the thing that's really interesting is what he next says. With the thought of seeing Dreamcast games appearing on current generation consoles through digital distribution, he had this to say:
  • "I can't give you any details. Suffice to say, there's a lot of technical issues, a lot of licensing issues. But we are very keen to bring [them] to players in the way we've done with Genesis games. We want to do it, but it's hard work to get there. Hopefully we can build on that quite soon."
Sure it's not a definite answer or anything but it gives us the idea that the heads are considering it and if all resources were made possible, they would make it happen as they claim to be "keen" on this idea. Do you think we could see Dreamcast games hitting the Virtual Console despite the size levels this imposes? No one can say for sure at this point especially in light of what's just been said. But I personally appreciate how he compares the means through which it would happen to the methods they've used to bring Genesis games into the hands of desiring fans, namely through the Virtual Console for Nintendo fans. Naturally it would be hard work to do and he understands that but he would like to get into it "soon", and explore whether or not it truly is possible to execute it. Let's hope they follow through, even with bringing Arcade games to the VCA!!
