Internet Channel update released - browser now free to new users

posted 1 Sep 2009 05:31 by Billy White   [ updated 1 Sep 2009 06:40 ]
An update to the Internet Channel has now been launched on the Wii Shop Channel allowing users to make use of "Adobe Flash Lite 3.1". This primarily allows users to watch a wider array of videos on different streaming websites (stop sniggering at the back), and is available as a free update both to new users and existing owners of the channel.

That's right: if you don't already own the internet channel because you were put off by the obligatory 500 point fee (approx £3.50-£5 / $5), you can now download it for free! This is presumably to allow all users to access the internet for free and make Wii owners feel more tempted to try it out, as well as to stop those complainers who moan about the PS3, PSP and DSi getting free browsers (and to a lesser extent, the Xbox 360 having online capabilities that would be possible with a free browser) but not the Wii.

For those of you who already previously bought the browser for 500 points, Nintendo are going to offer you the opportunity to receive any NES game on the Virtual Console section of the Wii Shop Channel at no cost! It's not the same as a full refund, but it gives me an excuse to get back into playing VC games instead of WiiWare games all the time, so I'm not complaining! The free game giveaway will take place from late October towards the end of the year, and if this offer effects you, you'll receive a message on your message board closer to the date via Wii Connect24, or Nintendo will release the information on their website stating the exact date of the offer.
